This was the beginning of a wonderful hike for me. Starting at the parking for the area it was reasonably marked for a back-country site with extra parking across the road (it is a little less obvious but there). The hike goes through some moderate elevation change (you might call it drastic compared to the rest of Indiana) and I noticed wonderful changes in local biological scenery particularly among trees. The trail goes all the way down to Lake Monroe on a peninsula. Along the trail you will pass multiple established camp sites and the area is also authorized for dispersed camping. If you go all the way to the lake there will be camp sites with great views of the sunset. An important note, I saw no water sources until I reached Lake Monroe. Bottom Line: I highly recommend this for a 1 or 2 night backpacking trip.
Nice hike to the camping area on the lake. Bring a couple of bottles of water along the only water source until you get to the lake. We use a filter but the lake is clean enough that you could just strain and boil if you want to. The scenery is awesome.
